STEVE DIKTO THE CO-CREATOR OF DR STRANGE AND SPIDER MAN PASSES AWAY AT 90

He may be gone but the legacy he created in his comics will continue to grow. Steve Ditko, comic book artist and writer best known as the co-creator of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, has died at the age of 90. The NYPD confirmed the death to several news outlets on Friday, a week after his body was found in his Manhattan apartment. The cause of death has not been revealed, but authorities believe Ditko died two days before a social worker found his body.

Steve DiktoDitko studied under Batman artist Jerry Robinson at NYC’s the Cartoonist and Illustrators School. He began his professional career in 1953 and worked in Jack Kirby and Joe Simon’s studio. In the ’50s, Ditko drew for Atlas Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics and in 1960, he co-created the superhero Captain Atom. Steve Ditoko worked together with Stan Lee to create Marvel characters like Doctor Strange, Iron Man and Spider-Man. Ditko was responsible for the Spidey’s signature look – the red-and-blue costume and web shooters were reportedly Ditko’s idea.

Following an alleged dispute with Lee, Ditko left Marvel to work at DC Comics, where he would create characters the Question, the Creeper, Hawk and Dove. However, he returned to Marvel in 1979. Ditko was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994.

He had a rough life but his art was more than enough to make moves, even in death. Despite remaining a controversial figure up until his death, XXXTentacion could undeniably sell music. Even with Spotify pulling his songs from playlists due to the violation of the streaming service’s hateful conduct policy, tracks like “Look at Me” went on go platinum while his ‘?’ album went on No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Following his death, sales of his debut studio album 17 skyrocketed by 9000% in 24 hours.

Due to his success on the charts, he was able to secure a lucrative deal for his next album. According to The New York Times, three people briefed on the rapper’s upcoming third record reveal that X had signed a $10 million USD deal with independent music company, Empire — who also released his first album. The founder of Empire, Ghazi Shami, noted that  “significant amount of material” for the record had already been finished, with no set release date. X’s last contract with distributor UMG could prevent the unnamed album to be held until October but the details of his posthumous deals remain unclear.

Kendrick Lamar has just become the first-ever rapper to win a Pulitzer Prize. The TDE superstar’s accolade comes courtesy of his 2017 studio album DAMN., which picked up the 2018 Pulitzer for music; the LP now stands as the first non-jazz or classical project to earn the award. In an official statement, the Pulitzer Prize Board described the release as a “virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.

Released in April of last year, DAMN. contains 14 tracks, including hits such as “DNA.” and “HUMBLE.” Rihanna, U2 and Zacari contributed to the effort as featured guests, while high-profile, ultra-talented beatsmiths like Mike WiLL Made-It, DJ Dahi, The Alchemist, Cardo, Sounwave, 9th Wonder and others provided the production.
